The Demobag® Story
It All Started With A Frustrating Day On The Job
The Demobag can trace its beginnings to a frustrating day on the job. In 2003, Bruce Williams, a 25-year veteran of the New England construction industry, was working as a contractor on a Boston area job-site. For this particular job, Bruce's team was refurbishing an old house that required that bricks from the original construction were moved from inside the job site, stored outdoors and then moved back into the jobsite to be used as part of the restoration. Bruce had been frustrated by moving large, heavy objects in trash bags before, but this job was just too much to bear. He was unable to store more than one or two bricks in a trash bag before the bag ripped and the load fell out. In a pinch, Bruce was able to locate a burlap sack, which is constructed of woven fabric and is stronger than a garbage bag. He was able to significantly increase the amount that he stored in each bag, but it still wasn't very strong and he learned - as it rained that night - that a burlap sack was hardly waterproof as well. Sick of the frustration and extra effort that this seemingly simple task required, Bruce had an idea - A heavy duty contractor trash bag that was built of woven material so that it would be strong like burlap yet also built of material that would resist the elements.
Bruce tried a lot of materials and techniques before finding the perfect combination in the fall of 2004: polypropylene strands woven tightly together to make a nearly indestructible bag. Bruce was pleased to see that the prototype worked exactly to his specifications and that he was able to carry well over 100 lbs. in one before it suffered from any kind of stress. On that day, the DEMOBAG was born, so Bruce invested his life savings into getting his project off the ground and bringing forward a lot of big changes into what can be a stodgy industry. His idea has caught on, and now Demobags are available in every US state, as well as numerous foreign countries on multiple continents.
"There are a lot of challenges facing the construction and demolition industries today" said Williams, who also acts as a consultant to construction companies seeking to improve efficiency. "From environmental concerns to increased government regulation to cutting costs in a sluggish economy and safety concerns, people who are engaged in construction and demolition have to find ways to keep jobsites clean and manage waste more efficiently, and this is where the Demobag comes in - it can carry up to ten times the amount of waste that a typical trash bag can and it can be reused over and over again without losing strength. It is an efficient, eco-friendly refuse bag that is also completely recyclable."
Williams, an individual who takes his commitment to efficiency and the environment seriously, goes on: "In the near future, you're going to continue to see a trend of increased environmental regulation - and the DEMOBAG is poised to fall directly into line with where this regulation is going. We use green-friendly means of production and we build a product that is reusable over and over in a multitude of ways. Finally, we help to keep waste under control and not all over your site as solid pollution without risking wasted time in cleanup because you don't have to worry about this bag breaking."
"With the construction industry and housing slowdowns that we have seen over the last year or so, people are really starting to look at demolition and remodeling as a way to help maximize their real estate investment. Of course, you have to take down the old before you replace it with the new, so Demobags fill a nice niche there - if you're on a budget, you know that efficiency is king, and this bag can really help in that area just because it has such a high capacity and level of durability. Plus, its great for other uses, like spring cleanup, junk removal and disaster recovery."
Over the past year, Bruce has surrounded himself with a group of individuals who care as deeply about economic and environmental efficiency as he does. He has hired a logistics director and a marketing director whose jobs are centered on both increasing efficiency in the construction and demolition world - through Demobags and through future like-minded ventures. "We're really moving forward with something interesting, here", says Williams, "This is an industry in a state of change, and we are right there with it - we are implementing an e-commerce system that allows us to manufacture at peak efficiency as well as cut down the amount of fuel that is burned in the process of distribution. "E-commerce puts us right on the other side of the screen from our consumers and it allows them to get what they want - directly from us - as well as offer valuable feedback, and even post videos of how they use the Demobag, directly to our website. This was unheard of in the industry just a few short months ago, and now it's a reality. It's truly an exciting time."
